Mary and Joseph Trusted God

Intro

Today we will learn about how God revealed to Mary and Joseph His amazing plan to use them to bring Jesus into the world - the baby that would eventually become the Saviour of the world. Mary and Joseph knew that taking care of Jesus would be a big task - they weren’t even planning to have a baby yet!

But we’ll learn in our lesson today that although Mary was troubled and Joseph was uncertain, they knew they could trust in God and His plan.

Trusting God Discussion

1. What did we learn about promises last week? When someone fulfills their promise to you, are you able to trust them more easily? Do you feel closer to that person?

(Leave open to answers)

  • We learned last week that God revealed many promises through His prophets, that He would bring a Messiah into the world, Who could save us from our sins!

  • We learned that in Jesus - the way He was born and lived, God fulfilled these promises.

2. Can you think of a time when you had a task that seemed very difficult or impossible? Can you think of a time when you had a task that seemed part of a bigger plan?

  • What helps you keep going when something seems very difficult? Was there someone that was helping you, or someone you could rely on? Was there a bigger plan that you could trust in?

3. Why do you think Mary was afraid when the angel appeared to her and proclaimed God’s plan for her? (Leave open to answers)

  • Although Mary was afraid at first, what did she say to the angel at the end of their encounter? (Read Luke 1:38)

  • Why do you think Mary said what she did in verse 38? (Leave open to answers)

  • In verses 30-37, the angel revealed God’s plan for her. If you were Mary, what would give you reassurance in what the angel said?

    • Possible answers:

  • Verse 30: “But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid Mary; you have found favour with God.”

  • Verse 37: “For no word from God will ever fail.”

Faith at Home

  1. What are some ways you could grow in your trust in God this week? What are some things you could do to help you trust in God and His plan for you?

(Possible answers: Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to grow your trust in Him; Read the Bible to understand God’s promises and plans even more)

2. Are there certain things in your life you have a hard time trusting in God about? What are some things that make you scared or hesitant? Do you think praying to God about these things would help? What have you learned about Jesus that helps you to be brave in the face of challenges?
